Welcome to my gallery page.

Having shifted to Glenorchy at the head of Lake Wakatipu, I'm enjoying painting the magnificent mountains and river valleys around us. I've also discovered some beautiful old buildings from the gold and scheelite mining days that will make great subjects in the future.

I recently had a flight around Mt. Earnslaw - unbelievable views.

I could only take photos on the flight, with the painting at the top of the page the

first I've done from them. I still much prefer working outdoors but it's a thrill

nevertheless to do a big painting like this in the studio - it almost feels like being

there.

If you've thought about going to painting classes, [even outdoors but you were too scared! ],one of my goals in moving to Glenorchy has been to teach groups of people [with some painting experience] in the 'great outdoors'.

At the moment, I'm building some easels so that I can fully equip small groups and helicopter them into spots similar to my Earnslaw view for a 'mindblowing' days painting.

In my opinion, you can't beat 'plein air' but you need to be well equipped and prepared to work under time pressure. Some people find it quite challenging but it's hugely rewarding when you start to succeed.

If you're interested, please feel free to contact me through this website.

[Also, you may find my DVD on painting in the outdoors helpful. They are available through this website for $60.]

Below is a selection of some of my paintings that I have completed more recently. I will  try to keep the 'gallery' section up to date so that only paintings that are for sale will be included.

"Under Mt. Alfred - old Farm Buildings at Earnslaw Station"

As new buildings, they hold very little attraction for me - but with

weathering and aging, they become so much more attractive to paint. It's always

frustrating when a favourite shed gets a revamp and fresh paint!

340mm x 450mm

" A Cool Morning on the Arrow Riverbed, Arrowtown"

Great lighting makes the snow sparkle when you

have nice strong shadows in the subject. A chilly time to paint though!

950mm x 420mm

"Sunset on the Richardson range near Glenorchy."

This is probably my favourite recent painting.

The colours of tussock, snow , and shadows at sunset are 'mouthwatering'!

[Don't be misled - the lower area of this painting is a deep purple/blue

and there are NO pixels - my camera just can't cope with it!!]

1300mm x 850mm

"Clearing After Southerly Snow on the Humboldts, Glenorchy"

I painted this one while out with a group of painting students. They thought it was

too windy and cold but they enjoyed it anyway! You can't beat enthusiasm!!

370mm x 780mm

" Heavy Snow on Coronet Peak from across lake Hayes"

A breezy day but ideal lighting for painting.

520mm x 1150mm

"Evening Sparkle on the Dart River Delta, Glenorchy"

1280mm x 420mm

"A View up the Rees. "

A backwater off the Rees River provides a beautiful entry into this scene.

I always enjoy the sense of peace that a quiet area in a painting

creates - e.g. this reflective pool - it beckons the viewer into the scene.

1300mm x 850mm

"Miner's Ruins, Rees Valley"

This ruin is commonly called the Rees Valley Post Office - don't know whether

it was or not. The colour of this old chimney made the painting!

360mm x 630mm

"Flood Debris"

The power of heavy rain is very obvious when you get to Muddy Creek,

- gateway to the beautiful Rees Valley. 4WD territory from here on!

440mm x 880mm

"Looking along the Humboldts from the foot of Mt. Alfred"

The colour of the dock weed against the snow meant I had to paint!

When I started, the weather was clear & calm. When I finished, it was

a blustery nor-wester,very cold, very trying, but I was pleased that I 'hung in.'

650mm x 1160mm

"A Glimpse of Turret Head Through the Winter Willows on the Rees"

A lovely area of the Rees river bed where  good subjects abound,

especially in winter after a coat of snow .

460mm x 560mm

"Late Light on the Richardson Range"

Fast becoming my favourite range of mountains.

440mm x 790mm

" Morning Calm at the head of

Lake Wakatipu "

410mm x 1250mm

" Towards the Barrier Range, Mt. Aspiring Nat.Park. "

One of my favourite painting spots,[and many other artists it seems!]

This view through 'The Narrows' and past the dominating tops of Mt. Nox, Mt. Chaos, and Cosmos Peaks is always inspiring. The Dart River jet boats travel across the foreground riverbed- their tourist customers often 'rave' about the trip when they visit my gallery afterwards.

1370mm x 470mm

"Moody Lighting after rain on the Dart"

With ever changing weather conditions, more or less snow, the often different

courses of the river, - I just can't help it! The Dart River bed is like a magnet to me.

790 mm x 900 mm

"Free Ranging after the Snow"

Mount Soho Station farm buildings near Arrowtown.

460mm x 620mm
